Message from Steve Webber, Head of Global Development

Dear colleagues

There has been much to celebrate in 2023. Over the last year and with your support, we have made significant progress on our diversification goals, building volume from new markets and growing our UG intake, and we’ve minimised disruption from our largest markets. As a University, we’ve been recognised for the quality of our academic delivery with a TEF GOLD award and students across the UK have voted Sheffield 3rd best student city in the UK.

I think it would be fair to say that 2023 has marked a turning point. My recent Christmas messages have made reference to the many challenges that the pandemic has brought but, despite these, Sheffield Hallam and wider UK HE have seen unprecedented growth. Sheffield Hallam’s 2023/24 intakes will still be some of its largest ever but I think it’s now clear that the ‘boom’ times are now being replaced by an era of increased competition and a more restrictive immigration policy environment.

The experience of last few years has taught us much and we’re confident that the changes we’ve made – improvements to Admissions services, clarified deadlines and processes, investment in University systems – will stand us in good stead as we enter a more turbulent market for student recruitment. The relationships with our partners in-country that have underpinned our recent dramatic growth will no doubt be critical as we enter this challenging next phase.

Whatever opportunities and challenges the next year brings, I look forward to exploring them with you. As ever, our recruitment success relies on the strength of the relationships we enjoy with you, our agent partners, and we hugely value the work you continue to do on our behalf. Thank you again for all of your support over the last year and best wishes for a safe, happy, prosperous and healthy 2024.
