Develop your own expertise in the relationship between politics, culture, and imperialism, whilst exploring the urgency and vibrancy of postcolonial writing and the study of empire. Topics may include historical and contemporary responses to imperialism and decolonization as well as the climate emergency, global capitalism, and migration and diaspora. If you have never studied empire and postcolonial culture before, or if you wish to expand your existing reading, our modules are dedicated both to canonical texts and the latest developments in the exciting field of empire studies. Teachers involved in the programme come from across many disciplines and foster and encourage interdisciplinary work. The University of Kent was one of the first universities to establish colonial and postcolonial studies in the UK and has continued to play a significant part in the development of the field with an incredible national and international reputation. The University is also home to the Centre for the Global Study of Empire, an interdisciplinary and multi-lingual centre that aims to promote research and public engagement in the areas of colonialism, post-colonialism, and imperial studies from across the world.
