As part of the New Zealand governments plan to support international education growth, eligible students are now able to work 25 hours a week on their student visa.

To be eligible, students need to be studying a full-time NZQA Level 4 of higher qualification of two-year duration or an approved English language, exchange or study abroad programme.

Working part-time is a valuable way for international students to not only strengthen their financial resources, experience and skill set, but also to extend their network and support their integration into New Zealand culture.

Part-time long-term roles in New Zealand are typically advertised on two key job advertising sites Trade Me and Seek, while Student Job Search includes upcoming casual and short-term employment for specifically for students.

Otautahi Christchurch Spotlight

In late 2025, Christchurch welcomed the opening of Parakiore, our new recreation and sport centre. Located in the heart of the city, a close walking distance to Ara’s Manawa Campus and a short five-minute drive from City Campus. The facility is the largest aquatic and recreation centre of its kind in New Zealand, offering pools, hydroslides, sports courts, gym and fitness classes.

Parakiore highlights the ongoing development and growth of Christchurch city. Along with Te Kaha Stadium opening in April 2026 - also in close proximity to Ara’s campuses – these new facilities enhance the vibrancy of the city and our standing as a world-class destination. Additionally, both facilities offer opportunity for international students looking for part-time employment as they study in New Zealand.

Student Success Spotlight

Molly Taylor, one of Ara’s talented Bachelor of Design (Fashion Technology and Design) students, has been awarded the 2025 Lauren Hemens Award for Commercial Potential in her final year of study.

The award honours Lauren Hemens, an Ara graduate who tragically passed away in 2023. Her family established the NZD$3000 scholarship to commemorate Lauren’s passion and recognise her talents in up-and-coming designers.

Ara Senior Academic Nathan Ingram believes it acknowledges Taylor’s “exceptional achievement in developing a conceptually rich, visually refined and technically accomplished body of work.”

For Molly, the award strengthens her standing as industry and career ready as she transitions from student to graduate. “This recognition gives me the confidence as I move into the next stage of my practice, knowing that my perspective and approach are valued.”
