Dear Partner,

At Torrens University we place a high value on the student experience and providing transparency as a tertiary education provider.

We would like to address recent concerns around our Bachelor of Community Services course. Our Bachelor of Community Services is a three-year course that provides students with theory and skills for a career in the community services sector. As a part of this course, students are required to undertake 400 hours of professional practice (industry placement) during the three years.

How are students supported?
Our Community Services course has a dedicated Placement Coordinator, Mr Greg Shepherd, who has over 25 years’ experience as a Social Worker. He leads our Placement Teaching Team, who work with students in securing appropriate placements but also ensures their placement hosts are communicated with and students are checked in on personally by their Learning Facilitator at least three times during the 12-week placement.

CareersConnect is our platform that connects our students with success coaches, potential employers, internships and placement opportunities. Our Industry Team works tirelessly to secure appropriate placement opportunities for students to apply for. This is an important part of getting our students ‘job ready’.

First-year students are supported by the Success Coach team in CV writing, application and interview skills to help them prepare for their placement interview.

What is the ACWA?
The Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA) is the professional body for qualified community workers in Australia. The ACWA website outlines the criteria they measure student applications against and we continuously encourage our students to review these details during their study.

As a part of the placement subject assessment strategy, students are required to submit an ACWA placement completion summary template. This form must be completed for each placement and submitted as a part of the Skills Assessment application after the student has finished the course.

If students have any queries during their study they can reach out to their placement subject learning facilitator or the Success Coach team and any future students can have their questions answered during upcoming Orientation.

We thank you for your ongoing support.

Kind Regards,

The Torrens University Australia International Team
