I hope you are well.

We have received a number of questions regarding the University’s plans to offer an SQA top-up route, so I wanted to take a moment to address the recent rumours and speculation.

To be clear, the University of Birmingham does not have any plans to deliver an SQA top-up year and any information suggesting this for September 2026 is incorrect.

As you may already know, a number of UK universities offer the SQA top-up programme. We are working with a specific partner and a small number of selected UK universities to support progression opportunities onto our programmes. Students who successfully complete a recognised top-up degree in the UK, and meet our standard entry requirements, will be considered for progression to postgraduate study at Birmingham in the usual way. There are no special incentives or fast track opportunities associated with this route.

I would be grateful if you could share this clarification with your wider teams to ensure a consistent and accurate message is being communicated to applicants.

Any future changes to our course portfolio or delivery models will be communicated directly by the University. If you have any questions, please do let either myself or the team know.
