Notably Psychology rose to 28th globally, marking the largest improvement Education returned to the top 30, continuing its long-standing strong performance Data Science and Artificial Intelligence entered the global top 100 for the first time, highlighting growing strength in emerging fields. Please click here for further details.  As we head into Auckland’s cooler months, students are returning from their mid-semester break, and we look forward to finishing the semester strong on a high note.   We’d also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your continued support and partnership – it is trully appreciated! Record international intake – Semester One 2026Semester One 2026 is shaping up to be the largest international intake to date at the University of Auckland. We are seeing strong growth across both undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts, reflecting continued global demand and the strength of our partnerships. International undergraduate offers have increased by 29.8% compared to 2025, while international postgraduate enrolments have risen by 3.5% year on year.  These results highlight the collective efforts and dedication of our agent partners, whose ongoing support has been instrumental in achieving this milestone. We sincerely thank you for your continued commitment and collaboration.  Click here for further details. Student visa application updates and next steps  Students who have not received a visa decision in time for their intended 2026 start date may still have options depending on their next available intake. This includes both those who applied late and those whose applications required extended processing time.  For students able to commence study later in 2026, applications may be approved in principle, provided all outstanding requirements are submitted by the specified deadlines. Visas can then be granted once conditions are met. For those unable to begin until 2027, it is recommended that applications be withdrawn and refunded, as supporting documents may become outdated; a new application should be submitted closer to the 2027 intake (around September 2026). Early planning for student visa applicationsStudent visa applications for upcoming intakes should be submitted well in advance to avoid delays and ensure a smooth start to studies. As we approach Semester Two, messaging will gradually increase in urgency, but at this stage, the focus is on early preparation and timely submission. While visa processing times may vary, applying early allows sufficient time for any additional information requests and reduces the risk of missing key deadlines. We encourage agents to support students in preparing complete applications and submitting them as soon as possible. On-campus accomodation for Semester Two University Accommodation is now accepting applications from students starting in Semester Two, July 2026. We have a range of accommodation options available for new and returning students.  Living on campus can help students settle more quickly, stay close to classes and campus services and feel part of the university community from the start. Utilities, internet and access to the University Recreation Centre are included in weekly fees.  Applications are open now and early offers are expected from mid-May.  Click here to explore our self-catered residence options.MTESOL 180-point programme introducing new entry pathway The 180‑point Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MTESOL) is a new hybrid postgraduate programme designed for recent graduates who aspire to careers in English language teaching but do not yet meet the professional TESOL experience requirement for direct entry to the 120‑point MTESOL. Students complete the first 60 points online from their home country over one semester, developing foundational TESOL knowledge in curriculum design and pedagogy, before progressing to the final 120 points on campus in New Zealand.   The programme provides a structured pathway into the University of Auckland’s globally recognised MTESOL degree, broadening access to early‑career and pre‑experience candidates. The first intake is Semester Two 2026 (courses start 20 July), with applications closing 6 July 2026. Register for the Master of Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood) webinarA webinar for the new Master of Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood) will be held on Thursday 30 April, 7–8pm NZT, providing an overview of this on-campus programme launching in Semester Two. This session is a valuable opportunity for prospective students to learn more about the programme and its study pathway.  With strong early interest from international applicants, agents are encouraged to promote this webinar to both offshore and onshore students. As this is an on-campus programme, early applications are recommended to support timely visa processing and enrolment planning.  Click here to register for the webinar and access the programme information. Skilled Migrant Category changes update Further changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) will come into effect from late August 2026, as announced by Immigration New Zealand. These updates introduce new residence pathways, refined occupation lists (including trades and technician roles), and simplified median wage settings across SMC pathways.   Additional changes include clarified qualification requirements for points claims, extended English language test validity for some applicants, and the introduction of recognised occupational registration for accountants.  For full details on these updates, please click here to learn more. Important update for applications to Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)Due to high demand for the BE(Hons), we are no longer able to accept further applications for Semester Two 2026. Please encourage students to apply for future intakes.Update: Semester One 2026 commission process timelineThe commission process for Semester One 2026 has continued through to early May following the recent public holiday period. Once this process is complete, Purchase Orders (POs) will be issued to you for payment processing. Please email your invoice, along with the corresponding PO, to invoices@auckland.ac.nz. We appreciate your patience and continued partnership. My UoA Journey international student stories now live on YouTube A new international student stories series is now live on the University of Auckland’s YouTube channel, showcasing the diverse and inspiring journeys of students from key markets and their experiences studying with us. This progress reflects the valuable feedback we have received from our partners and the collaborative work undertaken with colleagues across the International Office. We are also encouraged by the early indicators for the 2027 intake. Please keep ensuring you support your applicants with full applications, including verified documents, and that they are applying for programmes they are genuinely interested in, and qualified to meet the entry requirements for. Importance of accepting conditional offers A reminder that we often provide Conditional Offers before we are able to provide Firm Offers. At UoA, accepting the Conditional Offer is important as it indicates that your applicant is genuinely interested in the programme and would like us to continue to engage with them and you to move through the condition stages. We have seen a large number of Conditional Offers that were made for Semester 1, 2026 that were not responded to. We are looking at these offers and the expiry dates going forward, so if this is an area you would like to understand more about, please let our International team know. This month, the University celebrates a major milestone as our iconic ClockTower turns 100 years old. Officially opened on 12 March 1926, it has long stood as a symbol of the university and a focal point of campus life. Today, the ClockTower remains at the heart of the University, and we hope our ELA students will take the opportunity to visit and experience this special part of our campus story for themselves. Read on to discover what has been happening at ELA this month.Whirinaki ka eke ki runga,Let us join together to reach new heights!Paul O'FarrellDirectorELA Students Join the Buzz of Orientation WeekAlthough ELA students have already been in Auckland for several weeks or longer, many enjoyed getting involved in the wider University of Auckland Orientation Week festivities. With the City Campus full of activity, our students took the chance to explore further, join student clubs, enjoy live performances, and pick up plenty of free giveaways. As the university semester begins, we are excited to see our ELA students continue building friendships, exploring campus life, and making the most of everything the University community offers.Lots for ELA students to explore students at Orientation WeekHow Students Are Experiencing Life in AotearoaAs the “Share Your Story with #uoaela” campaign grows, we’ve been receiving more and more student submissions. They give us a real look into what life in New Zealand is like for them.Qijun Jiang and Yiting Xu from China shared beautifully‑edited videos documenting their time in Aotearoa. Chenlu Wang, along with Miyu and Misato from Japan, offered heartwarming snapshots of their homestay experiences. These stories help us understand how students are settling in and what parts of life in New Zealand they find most meaningful. We can't wait to receive more submissions! We’ve been amazed by the wonderful content that our students have shared with us Supporting Student Life at ELA: Meet Candice and RheaOur ELA students love exploring Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland through activities such as Mission Bay, One Tree Hill, Devonport, and the Domain Wintergardens. Helping lead these outings are our activity assistants, Candice and Rhea, who play an important role in supporting students outside the classroom.CandiceCandice is studying a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Academic English Studies and Linguistics & TESOL, and aims to become an English language teacher. She loves discovering new food places and going on short road trips. A highlight for her was a personalised campus visit she led for Academic English students, tailored to their future study plans. She appreciates ELA’s supportive, culturally diverse staff and the approachable environment students experience.RheaRhea is completing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Statistics and hopes to continue into research in Statistics Education. She enjoys singing, music, and spending time with friends. Her favourite moments with ELA students include meaningful conversations during activities, learning about different cultures, and seeing students enjoy Auckland — especially on sunny days with ice cream to finish. She values how ELA helps students build connections, practise English in real situations, and feel part of the wider University community.Candice and Rhea help students discover a vibrant community beyond the classroom — and we’re grateful for the enthusiasm they bring to every outing.Left photo: Candice (left) and Rhea (right). They have been fantastic additions to the ELA family!ELA Celebrates The Year of the HorseELA’s Student Support Team recently organised a Lunar New Year celebration to welcome the Year of the Horse.Students enjoyed a range of traditional cultural activities, including Calligraphy, Paper Cutting, a Lucky Draw, and a Ring Toss Game. These interactive stations gave everyone the opportunity to experience festive customs while learning more about the cultural significance behind them.We also prepared a wide selection of snacks, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for students to gather, connect, and celebrate together. It was a wonderful occasion that brought our community together to mark the new year with joy and shared cultural appreciation.ELA’s Lunar New Year Celebration was a big hit with our students and staff.Future study opportunities at UoAWe had a fantastic day exploring the university campus last week. Over 100 short‑term students from Japanese universities toured the University of Auckland and enjoyed a great presentation from Senior Regional Manager Dr Simon Underwood. We were also thrilled to hear from current Japanese students from the University of Auckland, who shared their experiences of studying and living in Auckland—offering valuable insights and sparking thoughtful questions.A great session for students considering future study in Auckland. We hope to welcome them back soon!We were excited to have so many Japanese students learn about future postgraduate study at the University!Preparing Future English Teachers: CELTA at ELAWe are looking forward to welcoming our next group of CELTA trainees, with our upcoming part‑time course now fully subscribed. CELTA remains one of the world’s most respected qualifications for new English language teachers, and ELA’s programme is known for its strong practical focus, supportive trainers, and real classroom teaching experience. For those eager to begin their training soon, places are still available in our full‑time CELTA starting on 16 November. This intensive option offers a fast‑paced, immersive pathway into the profession and provides the same high‑quality training that our graduates consistently praise for building their confidence and teaching skills. We are also pleased to share new video testimonials from several ELA teachers who launched their careers through our CELTA programme. Their stories offer valuable insight into the opportunities and professional growth that CELTA can provide. Please feel free to share these updates with anyone considering a teaching pathway. Many of our excellent teachers have come through ELA’s CELTA programmeA Month of Learning and Connection: Thank You and Safe TravelsA few weeks ago, we were excited to welcome more than 250 students from around 20 partner universities across Japan who joined ELA students from countries as diverse as Thailand, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Spain and Mexico. With the start of Japanese university spring break, it was the perfect time for these students to join us for four weeks of English language study here in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.Over the past month, we’ve enjoyed seeing them participate in class, grow in confidence, and make the most of every opportunity to immerse themselves in local culture. This is their final week at ELA, and we wish them all the very best as they travel back to Japan this weekend. We’ve loved hosting the current batch of Japanese group students on their Spring Break.Online EPPS: April Deadline Approaching + A Graduate’s Success StoryApplications for the April intake of our Online English Pathway for Postgraduate Studies (EPPS) close this Sunday, 8 March, and we encourage partners to submit any final applications soon. Online EPPS continues to grow as a flexible option for students preparing for postgraduate study from offshore, helping them build essential academic English, critical thinking, and communication skills in a supportive online environment. One of our recent graduates, Mandy Chu, has just arrived in New Zealand to begin Semester One. She visited ELA to meet her EPPS teacher, Sado Choi, in person for the first time—an inspiring moment that highlighted the strong connections formed through online learning. Mandy has now started her Master of Engineering Project Management at the University of Auckland, and we look forward to catching up with her in a few months to hear how EPPS has supported her transition into postgraduate study.Sado Choi (left), ELA teacher and Mandy Chu (right) meeting in person for the first time.Upcoming Course DatesAcademic and University Pathway English: 22 June, 7 September. Newsletter. We’re pleased to share positive news from Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland that strengthens the value of study outcomes for our students. In January, TIME magazine released its inaugural World’s Top Universities 2026 ranking, placing the University of Auckland 86th globally and as the only New Zealand university in the world’s top 100. The University was recognised in particular for its innovation and economic impact, reflecting strong real‑world relevance for graduates. This global recognition reinforces the opportunities available to ELA students across all programmes. As part of the University, ELA supports learners through high‑quality English language offerings, including General and Academic English, Group courses, and Pathway preparation. Whether students are building language confidence or preparing for further study, they benefit from learning within a world‑leading university environment.Read on to discover what has been happening at ELA this month.Whirinaki ka eke ki runga,Let us join together to reach new heights!Paul O'FarrellDirectorCampus Comes Alive:A Busy Start to the ELA YearJanuary and February are always a lively time at ELA, with new cohorts arriving almost every week and bringing fresh energy to campus. It’s one of our favourite parts of the year, as we welcome students into the University of Auckland and showcase some of the City Campus’s most modern and stylish lecture theatres. So far, we’ve held ELA orientations in the Science, Business, and Architecture buildings, welcoming several great groups, mainly from China and Korea. Next week, we return to the Business School for a large intake of Japanese university students visiting during their Spring Break. We also love capturing group photos that celebrate students’ pride in their home universities.Groups season is well underway at ELA!Kicking Off 2026 withInha UniversityWe were delighted to welcome our very first group from Inha University in Incheon, South Korea. The students joined us for a two‑week Cultural Understanding course, giving them a great introduction to New Zealand culture and life.Highlights of their programme included a visit to the All Blacks Experience at SkyCity, sailing on the Waitematā Harbour (arranged by the New Zealand Maritime Museum), and finishing with a gourmet farewell lunch at the Cordis Hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed hosting the group, along with their chaperone Minyoung Lee, who was visiting New Zealand for the very first time. It was a pleasure to have them start the year with us at ELA.Some highlights from our Inha University groupEnglish All Around:A Fresh Twist for 2026ELA students are already very familiar with our popular “English All Around” campaign, which encourages them to practise English beyond the classroom. Students earn bird stickers by using English in everyday situations, and the more stickers they collect, the closer they get to winning a fluffy ELA kiwi prize. This year, the campaign has a fun new twist. Students can earn even more stickers by submitting photos or videos of themselves enjoying life in and around Auckland — from trying new activities to learning new things and interacting with their homestay families. We’re looking forward to receiving plenty of great content from students as they make the most of their time in New Zealand and put their English into practice. The English All Around Campaign has been a huge hit with our students!Learning MoreAbout Future Study OptionsMore than 80 ELA group students recently joined a City Campus tour, which included an engaging presentation from Jennifer Roshan from the University’s International Office.Students showed strong interest in learning about future study options — and proved they were paying attention by scoring highly in the quiz that followed. One top‑scoring student won a University of Auckland T‑shirt. Well done! We’ll be running another session in February, with thanks to the International Office team for their continued support of ELA.A packed house - ELA group students learning about future study options at The University of AucklandA Behind‑the‑Scenes Visit to FHMSLast week, we took students from Dongshin University in South Korea to the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (FHMS) for a behind‑the‑scenes look at some of its teaching facilities. The group visited the Advanced Clinical Skills Centre, where health students practise medical skills in a safe environment before working with real patients. They also spent time in the Human Anatomy Library, which is not usually open to the public. There, students explored a wide range of anatomy displays, including donated human tissues that show diseases at different stages and the effects of injury on the human body. These visits provide valuable insight for our students and also reflect ELA’s strong connection with FHMS — a faculty where many ELA students go on to study after completing their English programmes with us.Dongshin University students exploring the Faculty of Medical and Health SciencesOnline EPPS – A Flexible Pathway to Postgraduate StudyOur online EPPS (English Pathway for Postgraduate Studies) programme continues to grow. Introduced last year, it has already supported three successful student cohorts and offers a flexible option for students preparing for postgraduate study from offshore. This year Online EPPS has April, June, and October intakes, giving students more choice and planning flexibility. The June intake is designed to lead directly into Quarter 4 postgraduate programmes at the University of Auckland's Business School. Students develop key academic English and study skills while learning online in a supportive environment. This programme provides a clear and flexible pathway for students progressing to postgraduate study.More information is available on the UoA Online page.ELA’s Online EPPS has three intakes in April, June and October.Block 2 Pathway Programme Deadline – 15 FebruaryA reminder that applications for ELA’s Block 2 pathway programmes, starting 6 April, close on 15 February.ELA pathway programmes offer students a supported transition into University of Auckland study, building academic English, study skills, and confidence for success in a university environment. Designed to align closely with University expectations, these pathways help students prepare academically while adjusting to life and study in New Zealand. With the deadline approaching, we encourage partners to finalise applications as soon as possible to allow time for processing and visa arrangements.Full programme details and pathway information are available here.ELA’s next pathway intake is coming up on April 6th, and applications close on February 15th.Supporting the International Student Journey: Eileen YangEileen Yang has recently returned to ELA after a year away, bringing with her valuable experience and a strong understanding of the international student journey. Eileen first came to New Zealand as an international student, drawn by the country’s focus on quality education, wellbeing, and its balanced lifestyle.Previously at ELA, Eileen was a valued member of the Business Development team. In her current role, she supports students with accommodation and arrival arrangements, liaises with homestay families, coordinates airport pickups, and manages related administration. She also works closely with students, partners, and families to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience.Eileen particularly enjoys using her own homestay experience to help students settle into life in New Zealand. Outside work, she enjoys spending time with family, travelling, doing handicrafts, and relaxing outdoors. We’re delighted to welcome Eileen back to the ELA team!Upcoming Course DatesAcademic and University Pathway English: 6 April (applications close 15 February), 22 June.
