OTAGO RANKED 155TH GLOBALLY

The University of Otago has been ranked Top 10 in Australasia and 155th globally in Time magazine’s World’s Top Universities 2026. This ranking highlights Otago as one of the world’s top-performing universities and reflects its global academic excellence.

DUNEDIN RANKED BEST PLACE TO LIVE IN NZ

A new data-led study has ranked seven major New Zealand cities on overall livability, and Dunedin has come out on top. Dunedin’s top position is largely driven by affordability, employment stability, and safety. With a median house price of around NZD $610,000, it is the most affordable city in the study. It also recorded the lowest regional unemployment rate among the seven cities assessed, at approximately 3 percent.

Safety was another major strength. Dunedin ranked at or near the top for low crime severity compared to the other cities included.

REMINDER: ADMISSIONS APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR S2/JULY INTAKE 2026

The deadline to apply for studies commencing in Semester 2/ July 2026 intake is 30 April 2026.

Scholarships are available for international students starting Semester 2/ July 2026 intake. Please review the details on our website, link here.

A few gentle reminders regarding applying for Otago Undergraduate Scholarships:

The scholarship offer letter is a separate document from the Conditional or Unconditional offer letter. Please ensure the scholarship offer is accepted within the two-week timeframe outlined in the scholarship offer letter.

Once the Global Scholarships offer or Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships for International Students offer has been accepted, the student will be invited to apply for the University of Otago International Academic Excellence Scholarships

There is a two-week window to complete the application and submit to the University of Otago International Academic Excellence Scholarships

If the student is awarded the International Academic Excellence Scholarship, ensure the student accepts the scholarship within the two-week timeframe given in the scholarship letter

BOTH Global Scholarships/ or Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships for International Students AND International Academic Excellence Scholarship can be held , i.e. they are stackable – potentially up to $50,000 NZD

REMINDER: ON-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION APPLICATION FOR S2/JULY 2026 INTAKE

Just a friendly reminder for your students to submit their accommodation application for the S2/July 2026 intake:

Applications for residential colleges and UniFlats open: 1 April 2026
Applications close: 1 June 2026

Late applications may be considered if places are still available.

HSFY NOW ACCEPTS STUDENTS WHO HAVE DONE SIMILAR PAPERS

Otago’s Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) is:

The first year for five of the professional programmes: Dentistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Physiotherapy

Not required, but can be used as an entry point to three of the professional programmes: Oral Health, Dental Technology

An excellent way to begin a degree in Biomedical Science or any of the broad range of biological sciences

Students who have already completed some University study can still enter HSFY, as long as they have NOT completed HSFY at Otago previously or have not previously completed this set of seven papers in any single calendar year. They need to declare their study at another university in case this is needed for transferring credit for previous study they have completed.

Examples of students now accepted for enrolment in HSFY include:

A high school student completed a University paper in New Zealand or internationally that has content that overlaps with one of the Otago HSFY papers.

Completed the first year of BHSc or Biomed at the University of Auckland.

Completed part/all of a degree in New Zealand or internationally that does not include all seven Otago HSFY papers taken in the same year.

Please note: Graduates who have already completed a qualification in medicine, and for whom pathways exist to obtain registration through the Medical Council of New Zealand, are not eligible to apply for admission to the MBChB programme, though they can apply for another professional programme (e.g: Pharmacy) in the graduate/alternative category.

NEW! AGENTS CAN APPLY FOR 2027 INTAKES FROM MARCH 2026

Starting this week (16 March), education counsellors are able to submit applications through the eVision portal for the key selection of diploma and undergraduate programmes starting in 2027.

□ Applications for all other programmes will open from 1 May.

DEFERRALS NOW VIA EVISION

The deferral function in eVision is now available for students who wish to defer their offer at the University of Otago. Please note that this function is only accessible to students through their own portal.

OTAGO OPEN DAY: SUNDAY 3 MAY AND MONDAY 4 MAY 2026

The University of Otago Open Day 2026 is a great opportunity for prospective students, their families, and anyone interested to experience campus life and explore study options at the University of Otago. During the event, visitors can attend programme information sessions, meet academic staff and current students, tour teaching facilities and accommodation, and learn more about student life in Dunedin.

It is an ideal way for students to gain first-hand insight into what studying at Otago is like and to help them make informed decisions about their future study plans. Entry to Open Day is free.

PARENTS WELCOME 2026 AT OTAGO

Last month, we hosted the University of Otago’s Parents Welcome event, welcoming parents as they dropped off their children to begin their studies in Dunedin.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for families to hear from Vice-Chancellor Hon Grant Robertson, connect with key University departments, and gain a deeper understanding of the Otago student experience and the comprehensive support available.

In the video below, international parents share their first impressions of Otago, what it means to join the Otago community, their hopes for their children’s study journey, and their advice for future students and families.
